Majority of Korean students regret their choice in major and hours studied per week

The majority of Korean college students express regret with their respective majors.

According to a graphic survey, 72.7% of Korean college students regretted choosing their majors versus 27.3% that did not.

The reasons for regret in order were: disparity from expectations, “it didn’t fit me,” low employment statistics, “I applied solely due to relevant grades,” low recognition from firms, too much information to learn, lack of professionalism, and irrelevance to reality.

Meanwhile, 59.3% of students wanted to change their majors especially to a STEM-related field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). Students also spent 3.94 hours studying English on average.

In the Korean education system, high school students apply to certain colleges and majors based on their high school grades. Thus, it is incredibly difficult to change majors once admitted as students are accepted into the major for a reason. This rigid system is currently the source of much distress for college students and young adults.
