This week, ITZY joined IU for an adorable interview on her YouTube show, IU’s Palette. While quizzing the members on their individual roles, skills, and personalities, IU wanted to find out whether multi-talented Ryujin feels pressured by her versatility.
IU started by dropping a big surprise on Ryujin—she’s been a fan ever since the ITZY star competed on YG Entertainment‘s survival show MIXNINE in 2018.
Although the show’s female team lost, Ryujin ranked no.1 overall out of 98 female trainees, so it’s no surprise her talents caught IU’s eye.
I had rooted for you since I saw you on a program called MIXNINE. And you finally debuted as a member of ITZY. I thought, “Wow, she finally debuted, I’m happy for her”.
But what impressed IU the most is just how versatile Ryujin is. While many idols in K-Pop only cover one position, she noted how Ryujin has a staggering four positions: center,
and sub vocalist.
Literally, you do everything.
Naturally, IU wondered if Ryujin feels pressure having to handle so many roles in the group. However, Ryujin modestly downplayed her talents, telling IU, “I’m not that great“. Of course, given her huge skillset, fans would likely beg to differ.
That said, Ryujin went on to explain that although she does have four official positions in the group, those positions aren’t “fixed“. In “DALLA DALLA”, for example, Ryujin says she didn’t rap at all despite being the group’s main rapper. Instead, the rap parts in ITZY’s debut song went to main dancer Chaeryeong and lead rapper Yuna.
Since each member’s position changes depending on the song, it seems that Ryujin doesn’t feel pressured by the weight of her official roles. IU wasn’t too surprised by Ryujin’s answer, revealing that in her opinion, the ITZY members “are all multi-talented“.
IU went on to describe ITZY as “an all-rounder group“—a term Yuna cutely taught the veteran singer-songwriter.
It’s no exaggeration to say that you are all-rounders. That’s what I thought when I was watching your rehearsal.
